Castle Howard | Bridgerton Filming Location and Jay Chou's Wedding Venue

Castle Howard is one of England's most iconic Baroque country houses, located around 15 miles from York. It served as a filming location for Bridgerton and Brideshead Revisited, and hosted Jay Chou and Hannah Quinlivan's wedding banquet. This article covers the architectural history, Garden and House highlights, wedding venue information, and transport options from York.

What Is Castle Howard? History and Architecture

Despite the name, Castle Howard is a country house rather than a defensive castle.

In 1699, the 3rd Earl of Carlisle commissioned playwright-turned-architect John Vanbrugh, working alongside Nicholas Hawksmoor, to design a Baroque palace on the Yorkshire moors. The east wing and main body were completed in stages, while the west wing was later added in a more restrained Palladian style. The result is a building with two distinct personalities: dramatic Baroque on one side, classical restraint on the other. The asymmetry became one of its defining features.

In 1940, a fire destroyed much of the south facade, bringing the dome down into the Great Hall and reducing nearly a third of the building to rubble. Restoration continued for decades, with certain rooms repaired in the 1980s during the filming of Brideshead Revisited.

Castle Howard remains the private home of the Howard family, as it has been for over 300 years. Parts of the building still bear traces of the fire.

Why Do You Recognise This Place? Famous Filming Locations

Castle Howard has appeared in British and American productions since the 1960s. A few worth noting:

In 1975, Stanley Kubrick filmed Barry Lyndon here. The Baroque architecture suited the film's eighteenth-century aristocratic setting well.

The 1981 television adaptation of Brideshead Revisited was the production that truly put Castle Howard on the map. The estate served as the principal location for Brideshead itself, and the filming directly funded restoration work on several rooms. The 2008 film remake was also shot here.

More recently, Netflix's Bridgerton Season 1 brought the estate to the attention of a new generation of visitors.

Garden and Outdoor Highlights

The grounds of Castle Howard are extensive. Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring water. The on-site trackless sightseeing train, Kelly Car, covers the main attractions and is suitable for visitors who prefer not to walk too much.

Parterre Garden

The central axis of this formal French-style garden leads directly to the mansion’s golden dome, making it the most iconic photo viewpoint at Castle Howard. It offers different moods in sunny weather and under clear winter skies.

Panoramic View of the Main House Side Wings

From the grassy slope at the side of the house, you can capture the dome and both east and west wings in full perspective. The shifting light creates strong visual depth, especially in winter.

South Lake

The lakeside features reeds, deciduous trees and pine woodland, with particularly layered lighting in winter.

On my visit, a rainbow appeared after the weather cleared. The distant hills added depth to the scene, making it the most unexpected highlight of the trip.

Skelf Island Play Area

Heading north along the lake, Skelf Island near the Boathouse Café is a must-stop for families. Wooden towers, slides and treehouses keep children occupied for about an hour, with picnic tables nearby.

Included in the Gardens ticket; no additional purchase required.

Temple of the Four Winds

Temple of the Four Winds overlooks the wider Howardian Hills and is ideal for capturing expansive landscape shots. It is also accessible via the Kelly Car.

Walled Garden

The entrance to the Walled Garden is an 18th-century stone archway, decorated with lion heads and wrought iron details. Even in winter, when planting is sparse, the architectural features are worth photographing. Beyond the gate lies a geometric garden that becomes more vibrant in spring.

Mausoleum, Pyramid and New River Bridge

Scattered across the grounds, these 18th-century follies can be explored on a walk along the lake and lawns. Each has its own historical context, making it an enjoyable route for a relaxed, photo-focused stroll.

House Interior: If You Can Get In

Inside the House, you will find grand halls, long galleries, salons, bedrooms and a library, displaying paintings, sculptures, antiques and the Howard family’s collections. It offers a rare insight into the lifestyle of the British country aristocracy.

If you are interested in architectural details or family history, look out for the “Behind Closed Doors” special tour, which takes you into areas not normally open to the public.

Around the Christmas period each year, the House hosts themed decorative events. Tickets are limited, so advance booking is strongly recommended.

On my visit, it was during the Christmas event period and House tickets were completely sold out, so I could only visit the Gardens. Not getting inside remains one regret to address next time.

Jay Chou's Wedding Venue: Can Anyone Hire It?

Taiwanese visitors may recognise Castle Howard for another reason: Jay Chou and Hannah Quinlivan held their wedding banquet here. The formal ceremony took place at nearby Selby Abbey, with the celebrations moving to Castle Howard.

The estate does not operate as a standard commercial wedding venue. It accepts private hire on an exclusive basis for weddings, photoshoots and large events.

Spaces include the Great Hall, Private Chapel and Lake House, making it well suited to high-budget weddings with a country estate aesthetic. Photography-only bookings start from around £1,000, while full exclusive hire for a wedding typically starts at £20,000 or more, depending on the season, guest numbers and services required.
